Directions To Wartook Rise

Please print out and take with you. GPS is wonderful but does not know local conditions. Sue can send directions from other places.

From Melbourne

Travel Western Highway to Ararat (200 km).

At Ararat you can come two ways.  The most scenic is via Halls Gap and over the mountain to us.  The second a little longer but same time,  flatter and still scenic is via Roses Gap Road.

Via Halls Gap

At Ararat, go straight up the main street past Art Gallery, traffic lights, Police Station (very good coffee at Vines or Kerry's, at night McDonalds the best) and on to Moyston, Pomonal and then Halls Gap.  As you come into the town go right just before the police station.  The signs say Horsham, McKenzie Falls, Mt Victory Road, and Northern Grampians Road.  It is a multi name road.  Turn right and we are 27km along this road.  You will go past Wonderland, Reeds Lookout, McKenzie Falls, and through Zumsteins.  Five km after you leave Zumsteins, you leave the park and get into farmland.  We are third gateway on the left, there is a blue and white sign saying Wartook Rise pointing up our driveway.  Turn left.  As you come up the driveway you will see our house and sheds on the right, your cabin is hard left. The road also goes straight on over our back valley.

Via Roses Gap Road

Continue on the Western Highway through Stawell and go another 23 km to Roses Gap Road. This road is 4km before Dadswells Bridge. It is near the 254 km post (from Melbourne) and a curved council sign. Just 2 km before this road is a Power Nap rest area and closer a koala sign.  There is no warning of the road.

Turn left on to the Roses Gap Road. The good sealed asphalt road goes for 30km from the highway to a “T intersection with the Northern Grampians Road. Watch for wallabies, deer and emu along this road.  Turn left and the Wartook Rise signposted driveway is on the right, about 6 km from the intersection. On the left you pass Samuels Road, and Carters Road, over a small rise and we are second gateway on the right.  There are multiple letter boxes at his gate, and a blue and white sign "Wartook Rise" points up the drive way.

Watch for wildlife particularly at dusk or in the dark, we have incredible richness in wild animals but few have road sense

As you come up the driveway, you will see our house and sheds on the right, your cabin is hard left. The road also goes straight on over the back valley to our lake. Go hard left, to the mudbrick building, your name will be on the door and the key in the door. We will come over before 10pm and make sure you have everything you need. Let us know what time you hope to arrive, if it is after dark, we can turn on lights etc.

From Adelaide

Travel from Adelaide on the road to Melbourne leaving South Australia just east Bordertown.  The road is now called Western Highway, and goes through Kaniva, Nhill, Dimboola and on to Horsham.  Horsham is a good place to buy supplies as the large variety of supermarkets have long opening hours.  Chickpea Cafe in Pysent Street has excellent coffee/food.  Late at night McDonalds is the best you can do.

Leave Horsham headed towards Melbourne, and 17 km out of town is a large Grampians sign.  Turn right just after this sign.  We are 30km along this road.  You pass through Laharum with school and oval, small hamlet of Wartook (Petrol and phone) we are about 5km along on the right.  On the left you pass Samuels Road, and Carters Road, over a small rise and we are second gateway on the right.  Watch for wildlife particularly at dusk or in the dark, we have incredible richness in wild animals but few have road sense.

As you come up the driveway, you will see our house and sheds on the right, your cabin is hard left. The road also goes straight on over the back valley to our lake. From the  Great Ocean Road/Western District.

Drive to either Hamilton or Cavendish where you have a choice, take the longer route  Dunkeld, Halls Gap and over the mountain to us.  The shorter route is via Henty Highway,  Brimpaen, Wartook.  Both routes are very beautiful.

Shorter route via Brimpaen to Wartook

Take the Henty Highway (A200) north towards Horsham. You get spectacular views of the Grampians as you drive along. At Brimpaen(approximately 88 km from Hamilton) turn right (east) on to the Brimpaen-Laharum Road (big Grampians Sign) and travel about 15km to a “T intersection with the Northern Grampians Road. Turn right (south ) and travel about 10km to the Wartook Rise drive on the right (between 27and 26 km posts to Halls Gap).

The Road from Dunkeld to Halls Gap is spectacular with rugged Serra Range and Lake Bellfield.   You turn left just after  Halls Gap Police Station on road to Horsham, Wartook, McKenzie Falls,, the main names are Northern Grampians Road and Mt Victory Road. Turn left and we are 27km along this winding and scenic road.  You pass Wonderland, Reeds Lookout, McKenzie Falls, and Zumsteins.  About 5 km beyond Zumsteins, you leave the park and enter farmland. We are the third driveway on the left, about 600 metres along.  There is a group of letterboxes and a blue and white sign saying Wartook Rise, which points up my driveway.  Turn left and go up the drive. Watch for wildlife particularly at dusk or in the dark, we have incredible richness in wild animals but few have road sense.
